Fear

What is 'Fear?'

Fear is a fundamental and potent human emotion, instinctively triggered by perceived threats, pain, or harm. While feelings of 'awe' or 'reverence' can sometimes resemble fear, they are more closely linked to profound respect and admiration.

This emotion is activated through neural pathways associated with our thoughts and past experiences. Fear can be categorised into 'learned' fear, which is acquired through experience, and 'intrinsic' or 'instinctive' fear, which is innate. Recognising the distinction between these types of fear is crucial, as it helps us differentiate between harmful fear and fear that can lead to personal growth and success.

Why is 'Fear' important?

Fear serves a vital purpose in genuinely dangerous situations by triggering the adrenaline response and the 'fight or flight' mechanism, which are essential for survival. For instance, feeling afraid when alone in a dark jungle with wild tigers is a natural response that can prevent us from taking unnecessary risks. This fear prompts us to react swiftly to avoid danger. However, it’s worth contemplating the origins of this fear: Is it learned from previous experiences, or is it an innate instinct? Would a newborn, unfamiliar with the dangers, react with fear when encountering a tiger?

Similar to how one might hide from a tiger, fear of divine punishment can lead individuals to conceal themselves from their Creator, often symbolically using 'leaves'—representing various identities, thoughts, and behaviours that mask our true selves. These temporary coverings allow us to navigate a world where truth and falsehood coexist, providing opportunities for growth and transformation. Through hardship, we can gain wisdom that helps us convert falsehood into truth and darkness into light, bringing us closer to our Creator if we use our time wisely.

What if a person chooses not to sin or repents, shedding their superficial identities to follow divine commands? Can obedience to God’s Word alleviate the fear of punishment? Would we still obey if not driven by fear? Is the goal of obedience to inspire awe and reverence rather than fear? Can fear evolve into reverence, ultimately fostering unconditional love for the Creator, leading to selfless service?

Reverence for our Creator cultivates humility, enhancing our relationship with Him. For individuals motivated by ego yet who still believe, fear of divine punishment may deter them from crossing moral boundaries, thereby preventing sin and promoting societal harmony. While this behaviour may stem from a selfish desire to avoid punishment, it contributes to a more peaceful society. For those who do not believe in a higher power, societal structures like community justice systems serve as a necessary deterrent against harmful actions, ensuring peaceful coexistence.

How can our 'Fears' help us?

Fears, often perceived negatively, can actually enhance our well-being and personal growth in several ways:

Fear alerts us to potential dangers, helping us avoid harmful situations, whether physical threats or abstract dangers like financial instability or social rejection.

Facing fears can uncover new strengths and capabilities. For instance, confronting a fear of public speaking can improve communication skills and boost confidence, leading to a sense of achievement and empowerment.

The discomfort of fear can drive personal reflection and goal setting. Fear of failure may encourage thorough preparation, resulting in better outcomes and increased success.

Acknowledging our fears makes us more attuned to others' fears, fostering compassion and strengthening relationships. This shared understanding can build supportive communities.

Experiencing fear as awe for our Creator fosters respect for diverse life forms, leading to meaningful relationships and a thoughtful consideration of others' feelings and experiences.

Reflecting on personal fears allows us to understand their origins and use this wisdom to free ourselves from their constraints, transforming anxiety into healthy awe and reverence. This shift enables us to navigate life with peace and fulfil our true potential.

How does our 'Fear' impact our Well-being?

While it can serve a protective role by activating the 'fight or flight' response, excessive fear can impede daily functioning and authentic self-expression, trapping individuals in a false identity.Fear is a complex emotion that profoundly affects various aspects of our lives, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Physical Effects

Fear is an unpleasant emotion that triggers various physical and psychological responses, such as anxiety, nausea, heart palpitations, and insomnia. Fear triggers the body's fight-or-flight response, leading to the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This reaction results in:

  • Increased heart rate

  • Elevated blood pressure

  • Heightened senses

Chronic fear can lead to negative health outcomes, such as:

  • Weakened immune function

  • Digestive issues

  • Increased susceptibility to chronic diseases

Mental Effects

Fear can cloud judgment and impair cognitive functions, making it hard to think clearly or make rational decisions. It often leads to:

  • Anxiety and worry cycles

  • Difficulty focusing on tasks

  • Impaired problem-solving and creative thinking

Persistent fear may contribute to mental health disorders, including anxiety disorders, depression, and phobias.

Emotional Effects

The fear of fear can lead to avoidance of risks, hindering practices like self-reflection and mindfulness that are essential for nurturing relationships. This avoidance can exacerbate personal and professional challenges, contributing to a cycle of depression and negative traits such as egoism and greed. Fear can create feelings of isolation and disconnection, leading to:

  • Social withdrawal

  • Loneliness and despair

  • Irritability, anger, or sadness

Unresolved fear may also lead to emotional numbness, diminishing the ability to experience joy or fulfilment.

Spiritual Effects

Fear can hinder personal growth and self-discovery by:

  • Preventing the pursuit of passions

  • Impeding risk-taking and embracing change

  • Challenging beliefs and values

When fear dominates, it can overshadow feelings of hope, love, and connection to something greater, essential for spiritual well-being.

So, 'Fear' is a powerful emotion that significantly impacts our physical health, mental clarity, emotional stability, and spiritual growth.

Addressing the sources of fear can lead to healthier coping mechanisms and a more balanced life, enabling us to thrive in all dimensions of well-being.

In societies where fear is used to suppress freedom, individuals may feel trapped by the fear of punishment. However, establishing healthy boundaries allows for free expression without infringing on others' rights, enhancing overall freedom.

Courts of justice can protect these freedoms when human rights are upheld.

On the other hand, feelings of awe and reverence positively impact well-being, fostering spiritual growth and humility. Embracing awe encourages reflection and forgiveness, helping individuals recognise the divine presence in all aspects of life, even in challenging circumstances.

How else can our 'Fear' Harms Us?

Fear, when directed towards anything other than God or as 'reverence' for the pursuit of Higher Truth, turns us into unwilling slaves to baseless anxieties that deserve no reverence apart from our Creator. This fear governs our lives, trapping us in comfort zones and hindering our progress toward transformative truths. By confronting the darker aspects of our existence with courage and remembrance of God, we can bring His Light into the shadows, seeking wisdom and assisting ourselves and others in overcoming despair.

Fear manifests in various forms, including 'doubt' regarding our true potential. Such doubt stems from a lack of faith in our Creator, often clouding our judgment of truth. It can arise from past disobedience and a rejection of Higher Truth, leading to self-doubt and diminished self-esteem. This disconnection from God can limit our success in relationships, careers, and our pursuit of righteousness. When fear and doubt drive us to disobedience, we may attempt to conceal our true selves, much like Adam and Eve after their transgression, which further distances us from experiencing God’s presence.

When we rely on anything other than our Creator, we invite 'false fears' that distort our reality and hinder our growth. Idolatry, whether of external entities or the self, leads us down paths of sin where we pursue selfish desires. This entrapment in darkness fosters anxiety, depression, and a disconnection from our true identity. As we lose control over our thoughts and actions, we risk regressing to a primal state, driven by instincts rather than righteousness. These negative emotions serve as signals from our true essence, urging us to reclaim responsibility for our lives, return to our Creator, and discover our Higher Purpose through surrender to His Will.

If we cannot step beyond our comfort zone due to a fear of taking risks, how can we establish a meaningful relationship with someone who differs from us? If we struggle to connect with others or are too intimidated to engage in discussions with those who hold differing views from our own limited understanding of truth, how can we ever liberate ourselves or assist others in breaking free from the 'labels' and facades we choose to hide behind? How can we genuinely come to know and honor our Creator's Name by embodying and sharing His Beautiful Attributes—such as kindness, compassion, love, mercy, forgiveness, gratitude, respect, patience, perseverance, and commitment—with another person, if our fear of stepping out of our comfort zone or revealing our vulnerabilities hinders us from forming meaningful connections? By isolating ourselves out of fear of showing our true selves, are we not also preventing others from drawing closer to their Maker? Does our fear of self-exposure inhibit us from being a helpful mirror for someone else?

What does Abrahamic Scripture teach about 'Fear?'

Jewish scripture, particularly the Hebrew Bible, emphasises the concept of 'fear' in relation to God as a profound form of reverence and awe. This sense of fear is not merely about being afraid but is deeply rooted in respect, love, and recognition of God's greatness and holiness. The term 'Yirat Hashem' (fear of the Lord) appears frequently throughout texts such as Psalms and Proverbs, illustrating that this fear is the beginning of wisdom and understanding. For instance, in Proverbs 1:7, it states, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction." This indicates that a proper reverence for God is foundational to gaining insight and moral clarity.

In Deuteronomy 10:12-13, the scripture calls upon the Israelites to fear the Lord, walk in His ways, love Him, and serve Him with all their heart and soul. This passage underscores the multifaceted relationship between fear and love, suggesting that true reverence leads to a commitment to follow God's commandments and live a life aligned with His will. The concept of fear in Jewish tradition is also linked to the covenantal relationship between God and His people, where this reverence is seen as a response to God's infinite mercy and justice, fostering a sense of accountability and ethical living.

In the teachings of Christ, the concept of 'fear' and reverence for God is nuanced and often intertwined with love and faith. Jesus emphasises that while it is important to have a healthy fear of God, this fear should not lead to paralyzing dread but rather to a deep respect and understanding of God's authority and love.

Jesus teaches His followers about the nature of God as a loving Father, which invites a relationship built on trust rather than fear alone. For example, in Matthew 10:28, Jesus instructs His disciples, saying, "Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell." This statement highlights the importance of prioritising reverence for God over fear of earthly powers, suggesting that true fear of God is rooted in recognising His ultimate authority and power over life and death.

Jesus often spoke of the Kingdom of God and the importance of living righteously, which involves a respectful fear of God's judgment and a commitment to His teachings. The parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) further illustrates that a healthy fear of God leads to faithful stewardship of the gifts He has given, encouraging believers to act with responsibility and reverence. Thus, in Christ's teachings, reverence for God is closely associated with love, obedience, and an understanding of His grace and mercy.

The Quran presents a comprehensive view of 'fear' and reverence for God, known in Arabic as 'Taqwa.' This concept encompasses a deep awareness of God's presence, a sense of accountability for one's actions, and a commitment to living in accordance to His guidance. The Quran frequently emphasises that fear of God is a vital aspect of faith, as it leads to righteousness and piety.

For instance, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:2-3), it states, "This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of God—who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them." Here, the connection between being 'conscious of God' and engaging in righteous actions is clear, illustrating that reverence for God motivates believers to uphold their duties and responsibilities.

The Quran encourages believers to seek a balance between fear and hope, as seen in Surah Al-Zumar (39:53), where it invites people to not despair of God's mercy, indicating that while fear of God's judgment is important, it must be coupled with hope in His forgiveness and compassion.

The Quran also teaches that true reverence for God manifests in humility, gratitude, and a commitment to justice and ethical behaviour in all aspects of life. This multifaceted approach to fear and reverence not only shapes individual spirituality but also fosters a sense of community responsibility and moral integrity among believers, guiding them to live in harmony with God's will.

How to use 'Reverence' and 'awe' to transform Darkness to Light

  1. Open Your Eyes: Develop mindfulness to recognise beauty and complexity in the present moment, revealing opportunities for growth even in challenges. Learn to 'see' with the eyes of your heart.

  2. Embrace Nature: Spend time outdoors to connect with nature, allowing its beauty to illuminate your life and provide a fresh perspective.

  3. Practice Gratitude: Reflect daily on what you are grateful for to shift focus from negativity to positivity, fostering resilience and appreciation for your journey.

  4. Engage in Creative Expression: Use creative outlets to process emotions and transform darkness into beauty, inspiring both yourself and others.

  5. Connect with Others: Build connections with supportive communities to amplify feelings of reverence and share experiences, transforming individual darkness into a collective journey toward light.

  6. Reflect on Spirituality: Explore your spiritual beliefs through practices like meditation or prayer, leading to a deeper understanding of interconnectedness and illumination.

  7. Take Action: Identify ways to contribute positively to your community, creating ripples of light that inspire others to seek their own illumination.

By following these steps, you can harness the transformative power of reverence and awe, turning darkness into opportunities for illumination and growth.

I will set My face against you so that you will be struck down before your enemies; and those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when no one is pursuing you. If also after these things you do not obey Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. ‘I will also break down your pride of power; I will also make your sky like iron and your earth like bronze. ‘Your strength will be spent uselessly, for your land will not yield its produce and the trees of the land will not yield their fruit. ‘If then, you act with hostility against Me and are unwilling to obey Me, I will increase the plague on you seven times according to your sins. ‘I will let loose among you the beasts of the field, which will bereave you of your children and destroy your cattle and reduce your number so that your roads lie deserted. And if by these things you are not turned to Me, but act with hostility against Me, then I will act with hostility against you; and I, even I, will strike you seven times for your sins. ‘I will also bring upon you a sword which will execute vengeance for the covenant; and when you gather together into your cities, I will send pestilence among you, so that you shall be delivered into enemy hands. ‘When I break your staff of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will bring back your bread in rationed amounts, so that you will eat and not be satisfied. ‘Yet if in spite of this you do not obey Me, but act with hostility against Me, then I will act with wrathful hostility against you, and I, even I, will punish you seven times for your sins. ‘Further, you will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters you will eat. ‘I then will destroy your high places, and cut down your incense altars, and heap your remains on the remains of your idols, for My soul shall abhor you. ‘I will lay waste your cities as well and will make your sanctuaries desolate, and I will not smell your soothing aromas. ‘I will make the land desolate so that your enemies who settle in it will be appalled over it. ‘You, however, I will scatter among the nations and will draw out a sword after you, as your land becomes desolate and your cities become waste. ‘Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths all the days of the desolation, while you are in your enemies’ land; then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. ‘All the days of its desolation it will observe the rest which it did not observe on your sabbaths, while you were living on it. ‘As for those of you who may be left, I will also bring weakness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. And the sound of a driven leaf will chase them, and even when no one is pursuing they will flee as though from the sword, and they will fall. ‘They will therefore stumble over each other as if running from the sword, although no one is pursuing; and you will have no strength to stand up before your enemies. ‘But you will perish among the nations, and your enemies’ land will consume you. ‘So those of you who may be left will rot away because of their iniquity in the lands of your enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their forefathers they will rot away with them. ‘If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their forefathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also in their acting with hostility against Me— I also was acting with hostility against them, to bring them into the land of their enemies—or if their uncircumcised heart becomes humbled so that they then make amends for their iniquity, then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also My covenant with Isaac, and My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land. ‘For the land will be abandoned by them, and will make up for its sabbaths while it is made desolate without them. They, meanwhile, will be making amends for their iniquity, because they rejected My ordinances and their soul abhorred My statutes. ‘Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor will I so abhor them as to destroy them, breaking My covenant with them; for I am the LORD their God. ‘But I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the LORD.’” ‘These are the statutes and ordinances and laws which the LORD established between Himself and the sons of Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. Leviticus 26:13-46

Let the wicked forsake his way And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the LORD, And He will have compassion on him, And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts. “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; so will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. “For you will go out with joy And be led forth with peace; The mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, And all the trees of the field will clap theirhands. “Instead of the thorn bush the cypress will come up, And instead of the nettle the myrtle will come up, And it will be a memorial to the LORD, For an everlasting sign which will not be cut off.” Isaiah 55:5-14

So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men and went to the sons of Ammon. Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him took from Mizpah all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, that is, the men who were soldiers, the women, the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon. And they went and stayed in Geruth Chimham, which is beside Bethlehem, in order to proceed into Egypt because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, since Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land. Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, “If you really set your mind to enter Egypt and go in to reside there, then  the sword, which you are afraid of, will overtake you there in the land of Egypt; and the famine, about which you are anxious, will follow closely after you there inEgypt, and you will die there. “So all the men who set their mind to go to Egypt to reside there will die by the sword, by famine and by pestilence; and they will have no survivors or refugees from the calamity that I am going to bring on them.”’”

And you will become a curse, an object of horror, an imprecation and a reproach; and you will see this place no more.” The LORD has spoken to you, O remnant of Judah, “Do not go into Egypt!” You should clearly understand that today I have testified against you. For you have only deceived yourselves; for it is you who sent me to the LORD your God, saying, “Pray for us to the LORD our God; and whatever the LORD our God says, tell us so, and we will do it.” So I have told you today, but you have not obeyed the LORD your God, even in whatever He has sent me to tell you. Therefore you should now clearly understand that you will die by the sword, by famine and by pestilence, in the place where you wish to go to reside. Jeremiah 42:13-18
